Scouting for Our Youth
Troop 1836, "The Texas Troop," is chartered by The Church of the Ascension, and meets Mondays at 7:00 PM in the Parish Hall. Boys aged 10 to 18 are encouraged to see what Scouting has to offer. Our troop has adopted the Boy Scout philosophy of boy leadership: Whatever a Boy Can Do, He Should Do. We believe that boys build character, gain confidence and develop leadership skills by making their own decisions (and mistakes). Adults offer suggestions, provide transportation and anticipate safety issues, but the boys are encouraged to take initiative in seeking opportunities for advancement and adventure.
Organization and Leadership
As with most Boy Scout troops, Troop 1836 operates under the patrol method in which patrols of boys report through a patrol leader to a senior patrol leader. The scouts in leadership positions meet annually to plan the troop campouts and then once a month to plan the following month's meetings.
Adults contribute as Scoutmasters and Assistant Scoutmasters, who work directly with the scouts, and as Troop Committee members, who facilitate fundraising and specific aspects of troop operations.
Camping Trips
A large element of the fun in scouting is gained through experiences on campouts, and Troop 1836 works to maximize those opportunities. Camping trips are scheduled once a month, usually departing on Friday evenings and returning Sunday afternoons. Past trips have offered backpacking, rappelling, climbing, canoeing, boating, rifle and shotgun shooting, snorkeling, fishing and swimming.
Service
As Scouts, we recognize our "duty to God and Country." Participation in both individual and troop service projects is encouraged. In addition to a variety of Eagle Projects, Scouts have cleaned beaches, collected toys for underprivileged children and cooked pancake breakfasts for our charter organization, Church of the Ascension.
Our Boy Scout Troop is outstanding and they would love to have your son join them.
