Daily Readings

We encourage you to read a portion of the Bible everyday. We have developed a calendar that provides for you to read through the entire Bible in a year if you read the sections provided for each day of each month.

While we began the reading schedule on January 1, you may start today and you will complete your reading of the Bible by this date next year.

Suggested January Readings

 

Genesis:  This is the ‘Book of Origins’ in the Bible.  The text presents the origin of relationships with a theological perspective.  The main theme is human rebellion (sin) against God and the Lord’s redemptive initiative to restore the relationship.

 

Exodus:  The bondage, deliverance, and initial history of Israel are laid out in this book.  Some see the pilgrimage of Israel as a paradigm of the Christian life.

 

Leviticus:  The central theme of this book is “How can a sinful person approach a holy God?”  The reading of this book is completed in February.

Leviticus:  This book is concerned with morals and access to God.  Note: We cannot fully understand the life, death, and resurrection of Jesus without an understanding of Leviticus.

 

Numbers:  The wilderness wanderings of the pilgrims of Israel are presented in this book.

 

Deuteronomy:  the laws for living as God’s holy nation are given along with a call to obedience.  The reading of this book is completed in March.

Suggested March Readings

 

Deuteronomy:  The blessings of obedience are followed by the curses of disobedience.  The book ends with the renewal of the Covenant, the promised blessings, and prophecy.

 

Joshua:  The conquest of Canaan and the division of the land are the focus of this narrative.  Pay close attention to God’s encouragement of Joshua (1:1-9) and Joshua’s farewell message (23:1-16; 24:1-27).

 

Judges:  In these readings we note human failure, divine mercy, and deliverance as recurring messages.  A key spiritual theme is the power of prayer when it is a real crying out to God.

 

Ruth:  This extraordinary account tells how a Gentile woman became an ancestor of King David.

 

1 Samuel:  The dominant characteristic of Samuel is his prayer life.  This book shows us the transition from the period of the Judges to the establishment of the kingdom.

 

2 Samuel:  The primary concern in this section is the reign of David.  The readings run through David’s moral fall and his murder of Uriah.  The reading is completed in April.

2 Samuel:  The reading picks up with the Divine judgments on David.

 

1 & 2 Kings:  In the Hebrew text these are one book.  The text deals with the reign of Solomon and with the history of the divided kingdom after Solomon.  The overarching message is the influence of rulers on their nations welfare.  The central figures are the prophets who confront the apostasy of the rulers.

 

1 Chronicles:  This is a supplement to the previous four books and is concerned primarily with Judah.  The stress is on the sovereignty of God.  The reading is completed in May.

1 Chronicles:  The reading picks up with the great festival when the ark is returned to Jerusalem and ends with the death of David.

 

2 Chronicles:  This supplement is largely concerned with the spiritual nature of the reigns of Solomon and the kings of Judah up to the Babylonian Captivity.

 

Ezra:  This is a record of the return from captivity and the rebuilding of the Temple.

 

Nehemiah:  We are given an account of the rebuilding of the walls of Jerusalem and the restoration of worship.

 

Esther:  The Jews are delivered by Queen Esther.  This is considered an example of the overshadowing protection of providence for God’s people.

 

Job:  This is the classic text on the problem of suffering.  The reading is completed in June.

Job:  The reading continues with Job’s self defense.  Key points: God answers Job and rebukes Job’s friends.  Job prays for his friends.  God brings Job through his tragedies and enables him to live a long life.

 

Psalms: These poems address many religious experiences.  The predominate themes are prayer and praise.  The Psalms are quoted more frequently in the New Testament than any other book of the Bible except Isaiah.  The readings are completed in July.

Proverbs: These pithy sayings represent a collection of instructions on living wisely.

Ecclesiastes: The ‘preacher’ reflects on his conflicted mind concerning the problems of life.

Song of Songs: The text has been considered by scholars as a spiritual allegory of the affections between God and his chosen people.

Isaiah: The second part of the text is completed this month.  This section contains predictions, warnings, and promises that extend into the centuries beyond the Captivity.

 

Jeremiah: Some call this the book of the ‘weeping prophet.’  He addresses the period leading up to the Captivity through several years beyond the Captivity.  This is the book that is read when there is no prophet in the land.

 

Lamentations: Jeremiah gives us a series of dirges that portray the capture and destruction of Jerusalem.

 

Ezekiel: We begin our reading with the preparation and call of the prophet and his life with the captives in Babylon.  The reading is completed in September.

Ezekiel:  The portrayal of pre-exilic Judah is completed.  This followed with promises and predictions for post-exilic Judah.

 

Daniel:  This book stresses God’s sovereignty over world affairs for all times.

 

Hosea:  The apostasy of the northern kingdom is shown as spiritual adultery.

 

Joel:  The prophet proclaims a day when there will be a national repentance followed by divine blessings.

 

Amos:  The readings depict impending judgments on the region.  The dispersion of the northern kingdom is predicted.

 

Obadiah:  God’s providential care for Israel is shown as well as his judgment for those who persecute Israel.

 

Jonah:  We learn that God uses imperfect people to accomplish his plans to be merciful.

 

Micah:  The prophet address the divine condemnation of the two kingdoms and offers the hope of reformation under a Messiah king.

 

Nahum:  The destruction of Nineveh is promised.  Judah is promised deliverance.

Habakkuk:  The prophet is perplexed with all the unpunished evil in the world.  God’s answer causes him to persevere.

 

Zephaniah:  This book addresses the searching judgments of God

 

Haggai:  The prophet of the Temple delivers a sharp rebuke for neglecting the restoration of the Temple.  Promises of blessings are declared for those who engage in the project.

 

Zechariah:  The prophet speaks to openly sinful conditions and religious indifference.  H announces the coming of the Messiah.

 

Malachi:  The last book of the Old Testament shows the great reforms that are needed to prepare for the coming of the Messiah.

 

Matthew:  The apostle presents Jesus of Nazareth as the Messiah of Jewish prophecy.

 

Mark:  The writer allows the works of Jesus testify to his divinity.

 

Luke:  The apostle gives us an orderly account of Jesus’ life.  This month the readings include  his birth through some of his public ministry.  The book is completed in November.

Luke: The evangelist completes his account of Jesus’ public ministry, tells us of our Lord’s last days, and testifies to the Resurrection and the Ascension.

 

John: The beloved disciple proclaims the eternal Word incarnate in Jesus.  The author desires that the reader come to faith in Jesus and have eternal life.

 

Acts: The author of the 3rd gospel (Luke) gives us a history of the early church.  This is a testimony of the work of the missionary Spirit of God.

 

Romans: Paul describes the plan of salvation (justification through faith in Jesus Christ alone) and gives exhortations for living the Christian life.

 

1 Corinthians: In the appointed sections of this letter Paul describes the cleansing of the church from false understandings of the nature of being a Christian and of being a Christian Community.  There reading of the letter is completed in December.
